Concept Note


A 2-day workshop bringing together accomplished performance from Greek and Turkey focusing on two aspects:

Musical instruments key to Greek ethnic bands and their various performance techniques - a critical approach through the study of the relevant Turkish ethnic music instruments.
Comparative review of these instruments within the framework of their original music culture in order to identify possible interactions, performance style transformations, similarities and differences over the various stages of their historical evolution/of their evolution over time.


Session 1:

Vocal and instrumental performance: Greek ethnic music techniques -- relations, interaction and exchanges between Greek ethnic music instruments and music and the relevant Turkish ethnic music instruments and musical idioms.

Greek ethnic instruments: clarinet, percussion, Istanbul lute.
Evolution processes; surviving versions; variants.

Session 2:

Vocal and instrumental performance modality in the framework of the two neighboring cultures.

Shared repertoire and its versions.
Improvisation forms.
