As American democracy faces unprecedented challenges, civic education is more important than ever. Alarmingly, however, the civic education of our young people fails to meet the moment. The 2022 NAEP Civics Assessment, “the nation’s report card,” finds that levels of civic knowledge are low and declining. Rather than focus on the need to improve civic education, the national conversation on civics has been stymied by the same divisiveness that plagues the body politic. In of the heat over civics, however, there is light to be found — scholars from multiple disciplines have insights on an effective civic education.

This webinar, hosted by the American Academy of Political and Social Science, will highlight research from a multi-disciplinary team of researchers to describe what works in civic education, and it will feature a dialogue on re-orienting teaching and learning toward meaningful civic outcomes. Participants in the webinar will hear some of the leading scholars in civics discuss key takeaways and findings assembled in the current volume of the ANNALS: Civic Education in a Time of Democratic Crisis. Panelists will discuss how educators can more effectively teach civics and how to best prepare our young people to be champions of democracy. Several articles in the ANNALS volume feature recent insights from the National Academy of Education Educating for Civic Reasoning and Discourse report and the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap.
