Barge Design Solutions, Inc. (Barge) worked closely with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to design a one-mile master plan for City Walk BHAM. Barge also developed detailed design and construction documents for the build of the expansive 31-acre, 10-block recreational space under the interstate bridges in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. The team incorporated strategic, innovative spaces to reconnect neighborhoods from both sides of the new I-59/I-20 bridges through active, engaging activities including walking paths, a dog park, a food truck area, sports fields, a playground, water features, a 60,000-SF skate park, and pickleball courts. This project brings a spotlight to the untapped potential of underpass conditions across the country, redefining their role and purpose.
