April 1964. Malcolm X boarded a plane to Mecca believing white people were "blue-eyed devils" created by an evil scientist 6,000 years ago. He had preached this message for 12 years as the Nation of Islam's top spokesman.
21 days later, he returned to America believing the exact opposite.

What happened in Mecca? Malcolm prayed alongside blonde-haired, blue-eyed Muslims who treated him as a brother. He had breakfast with a white American who showed more genuine love than some Black people he knew. He was invited to dinner by Saudi Prince Faisal, who taught him that Islam was sent to destroy racism, not justify it.

Malcolm's letters from Mecca shocked the world: "I have been wrong. A blanket indictment of all white people is as wrong as when whites make blanket indictments against all blacks."

But this transformation came with a terrible price. When Malcolm returned preaching racial unity instead of racial separation, the Nation of Islam marked him for death.

Because if Malcolm was right about Mecca, then Elijah Muhammad was wrong about everything. And 400,000 followers might follow Malcolm instead.

On February 21, 1965—exactly 10 months after returning from Mecca—Malcolm X was shot 21 times at the Audubon Ballroom.
The journey to Mecca saved his soul. But it guaranteed his death.
