Project 180 is one of the most ambitious downtown renovation projects in recent memory: a $180 million initiative to make the city safer, more walkable, and less auto-dominated. Trees planted an important role in this traffic-slowing strategy — more than 13,000 Silva Cells were installed starting in 2009, helping support over 2,000 trees. This urban forest is now thriving, adding to the city’s overall canopy coverage, cooling the streets and sidewalks, storing carbon, and treating stormwater at its source.
