Abu Mujahid Fareed Abdullah رحمه الله: A Lifelong Devotee of Knowledge and Dawah (brief bio)

Abu Mujahid Fareed Abdullah رحمه الله was born in the Bahamas in August 1959. His journey of learning about Islam began when he was around 14 to 16 years old. Eager to learn more, he embarked on a quest for knowledge that would shape his life and make him a beacon of wisdom for those fortunate enough to know him.

He traveled to Guyana to study the Arabic language, which deepened his understanding of the teachings of Islam. He later earned a bachelor's degree from Muhammed ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, showcasing his dedication to learning.

Abu Mujahid had the privilege of learning from some of the most knowledgeable and wise scholars of our time, such as Shaykh Ibn Baaz and Shaykh Abdullah Al Ghudayan, who helped him better comprehend Islam.

In 1991, he became an imam at Masjid Mumin in Los Angeles. In 2001, he had the special opportunity to meet Shaykh Muqbil, an encounter that left a profound impact on him.

Despite his achievements and years of dedication to knowledge and teaching, Abu Mujahid remained remarkably humble and unassuming. He preferred to be called "Brother Fareed" or "Abu Mujahid," favoring the simplicity of these titles over grandiose appellations. He was approachable and even sat on the floor while teaching, fostering a sense of inclusiveness.

Known for his kindness, Abu Mujahid would direct those seeking answers beyond his knowledge to scholars who could assist. He warmly welcomed everyone and even took the initiative to clean the masjid himself.

He wasn't just a student or a teacher; he lived the teachings of Islam. He enjoyed outdoor activities like hunting and camping, and he established a gym in the masjid to promote physical fitness.

Teaching was his passion. He conducted classes in Los Angeles every week, making the concepts of aqeedah and fiqh easy to grasp. He did the same in the Bahamas, where he held classes almost every day, twice a day, demonstrating his commitment to sharing knowledge with his community.

Abu Mujahid's teaching style was unique. He used real-life stories and humor to make learning enjoyable for everyone. He also offered private lessons on topics like marriage, umrah, and hajj, using his own book to provide clear explanations.

Abu Mujahid Fareed Abdullah رحمه الله was not just a da’ee; he illuminated the hearts of those who knew him. His dedication, kindness, and love for fellow Muslims made him a special figure in the world of dawah. He didn't just talk about the teachings of Islam; he embodied them in his actions, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire everyone on a path of goodness.

Shaykh Fareed رحمه الله passed away on Tuesday, August 8th, 2023, coinciding with the 21st of Muharram 1445H.
