On the morning of May 15th, 2016, a group of over 100 criminals entered convenience stores across Japan, their task precise and calculated. With fake cloned cards in hand, they approached ATMs, executing one withdrawal after another, always for the maximum of 100,000 yen. They did this for the next 3 hours.

This wasn’t random. The ATMs had been compromised using stolen credit card data from South Africa’s Standard Bank. Over the next three hours, more than 1,400 ATMs across the country were hit in unison. The withdrawals totaled an astonishing 1.4 billion yen—13 million dollars—drained in a flash. Since, no mastermind has been caught and this remains one of the biggest, if not the biggest unsolved heist in Japan's history. The FBI, CIA, Interpol, and many other agencies across the globe tried to solve this, but this heist has gone cold.

When the dust settled, authorities were left scrambling for answers. Japan had just lost millions in one of the most sophisticated ATM heists in history.
