In typical Igbo Traditions and Customs, there are a series of initiation rituals that spans the whole course of one's life and commemorates their personal transformations.

They include birth, naming, circumcision or coming-of-age initiations, masquerade or mmanwu secret society initiation, and burial into the realm of ancestors.

Traditionally called Iba nmanwu in the Igbo Language, and done by iga masquerade during the new yam festival celebrations, the completion of the Igbo Masquerade initiation ritual made initiates more of a full-fledged part of the community, conferring increased prestige and responsibility to them.
