Mass graves in Malaysia found as Southeast Asian migrant crisis continues - TomoNews

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — Malaysian authorities have discovered more than one hundred bodies in mass graves near towns bordering Thailand.

So far, authorities have discovered over 100 bodies and 30 graves. Though these numbers are expected to rise. Police suspect the graves contain the remains of human trafficking victims.

According to Reuters, more than 3,000 migrants, most from Myanmar and Bangladesh, have landed in Malaysia
and Indonesia this month following a crackdown on trafficking by Thai authorities.

Last Thursday, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak pledged assistance, ordering the navy to rescue migrant boats adrift at sea.

Separately, Myanmar's navy found two Thai trafficking boats off the Rakhine coast last Thursday -- one carrying migrants and the other empty, government sources said.

At least eight Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar were among the 200 rescued, according to interviews conducted by Reuters, contradicting official accounts that all were from Bangladesh.

Southeast Asia is handling a humanitarian crisis involving thousands of people. Despite a crackdown on smuggling routes, many remain trapped at sea in what the United Nations has described as 'floating coffins'.
