Furtwangen im Schwarzwald

Furtwangen im Schwarzwald is a town in the Schwarzwald-Baar district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The small town is characterised by the companies based there, the Furtwangen University and, from a historical point of view, the watch industry.

Furtwangen is located in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park in the southeastern Black Forest natural area, about 25 kilometers west of the district town of Villingen-Schwenningen and about 27 kilometers northeast of Freiburg.

The city lies between 850 and 1150 m above sea level and describes itself as the "highest city in Baden-Württemberg". The town of Meßstetten on the Swabian Alb, which lies between 737 and 989 m above sea level, is higher than Furtwangen – measured by the altitudes of the respective parish churches. However, Meßstetten claims to be only "one of the highest cities in the Federal Republic of Germany". At 1149 m above sea level, the Brend is the highest elevation in Furtwangen and lies northwest of the town. The city is scenically located in a crossroads of three valleys and is surrounded by densely forested mountains.

On the Black Forest ridge through Furtwangen runs the main European watershed. The district of Neukirch drains towards the Rhine and the North Sea, the urban area and the other districts drain towards the Danube and the Black Sea.

On the edge of Furtwangen rises the Breg, it is the longest source river of the Danube and flows together with the Brigach in Donaueschingen. For this reason, Furtwangen claims the source of the Danube for itself in the "Danube Spring Dispute", there is no source of the Danube (even if the "Danube Spring" in the Donaueschingen Castle Park is called that). After approval by the Ministry of the Interior, both cities have been allowed to bear the additional designation "Donauquellstadt" since January 1, 2022.

The "state-approved climatic health resort" (the seal actually only applies to the suburb of Neukirch) is industrial, but also plays a role as a hiking and winter sports area for tourists. Furtwangen University is also of great importance with 5046 students, 2800 of them at the Furtwangen campus (as of April 2022).
