LECTURE 5: Carbonate Isotope Record

This lecture series includes five individual presentations focused on oxygen isotopes in lake sediments, with particular focus on authigenic carbonates. The intended audience is for undergraduate or graduate level students in a paleoclimate, global climate change, or isotope geochemistry course. The lectures begin by introducing basic concepts fundamental to stable isotope geochemistry and water stable isotopes, and then relate these principles to the hydrology, sedimentology, and oxygen isotope geochemistry of lacustrine carbonates. The end goal of the lectures is for students to understand the methods and interpretations involved in generating paleoclimate records using oxygen isotope analyses of lacustrine carbonates.

The idea for the lectures were conceived and created by Dr. Jonathan Dean (University of Hull) and Dr. Matt Finkenbinder (Wilkes University) for the Virtual Palaeoscience (VIPs) project
