In an exclusive interview with Reuters, Hamas politburo member Mohammed Nazzal said the group intends to maintain security control in Gaza during an interim period and cannot commit to disarming, posing challenges to U.S. President Donald Trump’s ceasefire plan for Gaza. Speaking from Doha, Nazzal said Hamas is ready for a five-year ceasefire to rebuild Gaza but insisted that any disarmament “depends on the nature of the project.”

Nazzal defended Hamas’ recent actions in Gaza, calling public executions “exceptional measures” during wartime. His comments come as phase-two negotiations under the Trump-brokered ceasefire are set to begin soon.

Trump’s plan calls for Hamas to release all hostages, disarm, and hand governance to a technocratic committee under an international transitional body — a move supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

While Trump said he expects Hamas to “honour their commitments,” Nazzal emphasized that Hamas will remain on the ground to secure aid and prevent looting during the transition.
