Polygonum orientale - The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil. Young shoots - cooked. The young shoots are a standard vegetable in Indo-China. Although no specific mention has been made for this species, there have been reports that some members of this genus can cause photosensitivity in susceptible people. Many species also contain oxalic acid (the distinctive lemony flavour of sorrel) - whilst not toxic this substance can bind up other minerals making them unavailable to the body and leading to mineral deficiency. Having said that, a number of common foods such as sorrel and rhubarb contain oxalic acid and the leaves of most members of this genus are nutritious and beneficial to eat in moderate quantities. Til ættkvíslarinnar hnútagrasa (Polygonum L.) af súruætt (Polygonaceae) teljast einærar tegundir, með jarðlæga eða upprétta, oft marggreinda, stöngla. Blöð stilkstutt eða stilklaus, sporbaugótt eða öfugegglaga, geta verið mjólensu- eða striklaga og stofnendi blöðku yddur eða ávalur. Axlarslíður brún- eða hvítleit. Blóm eru lítil, tvíkynja, í blaðöxlum eða einstök. Blómhlífarblöð fimm, grænleit með rauðan eða hvítan fald. Fræflar eru fimm til átta. Fræni eru þrjú. Aldin er þríhyrnd hneta. Polygonum er komið úr grísku, polys, margur; gony, ef. gonatos, hnútur, kné. Nafnið hnútagras er af þessu dregið, en hnúskar myndast á stöngli við liðamót. Fyrrum töldust allmargar tegundir til þessarar ættkvíslar, en þær hafa verið fluttar í aðrar kvíslir eins og Persicaria og Bistorta. Polygonum are related to one of most pernicious weeds of north - P. japonicum - although ornamental species much less agressive and easier to manage, still often regarded as weedy; popular in England and Europe; genus name from the Greek polys meaning many and gonu meaning swollen, refering to the swollen stem nodes; taxonomists have split the genus into two other genera - Persicaria and Fallopia, although it is still often seen in usage as Polygonum.
