The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security (then called the Working Group on Civilian Biodefense) was founded by Dr. D.A. Henderson at Johns Hopkins University in 1998. Dr. Henderson previously led the WHO's Smallpox Eradication Program, which successfully eradicated variola virus from nature in 1980. In 2012, the Center took on a project called the Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity Initiative (ELBI). That year, ELBI brought together a cohort of 24 graduate students and early career professionals to learn more about the field of biosecurity and identify ways that they could contribute. In this video taken on the first day of their Spring Workshop, Dr. Henderson reviewed progress made in strengthening domestic biosecurity and identified a number of technical and policy challenges, many of which remain with us today.
