Have you ever filled a nice cold glass of iced tea on a hot summer day and placed it outside for a few minutes? What happened to the glass?… Did your glass sweat? The water that formed on the exterior of your glass formed through condensation!

Hi, I’m Mr. Weather, and in this lesson, you’ll explore the process of condensation and how it’s vital for cloud formation.

Even if you can’t see or feel it, the air around you is mostly water — more specifically, water vapor. Water vapor is everywhere because water from Earth’s surfaces evaporates into the air. The air can only hold a certain amount of water vapor depending on the temperature and atmospheric pressure in a given area.

Clouds form when a parcel of air, or block of air, cools to the dew point temperature. The dew point is where the air reaches its maximum saturation, and water vapor condenses or changes its state from a gas into a liquid.

The most common way that air can reach this point of saturation is through lifting. The parcel rises, cools, and expands. The rate that the air parcel cools with increasing elevation is called the lapse rate.

Once the parcel reaches saturation or the dew point temperature, water vapor condenses onto tiny particles in the air called condensation nuclei. The resulting water drops combine and create cloud droplets. The accumulation of many cloud droplets forms a cloud!

Since the atmosphere is in constant motion — clouds appear, disappear, and constantly change shape. Next time you look up at the clouds, you’ll have a better understanding of why they’re there!
