How does an Optical Mouse Work?
See, the LED which is installed at the bottom of an Optical Mouse emits a bright light in the downward direction. Now, as an Optical mouse is designed to be used on plain surfaces, this light is reflected back and is detected by the light-detector chip. This light-detector chip is also located at the bottom of the mouse, right next to the LED.
This chip consists of a frontal lens which magnifies any light entering it. This light signal is used to figure out the position of the mouse as well as the mouse pointer on the computer screen. Now, as we move the mouse around, the direction of the reflected beam changes, this information is then used to figure out the speed as well as the direction in which the mouse is being moved.
