A Reasoning With The Most Hon. PJ Patterson about the Jamaican Constitution

Jamaica was established as a constitutional democracy under the Jamaica (Constitution) Order in Council in 1962. This Order was made on 23rd July 1962, and laid before Parliament on 24th July 1962. Since the making and implementation of The Jamaica Constitution and with varying levels of public interest or urgency at different times, there have been calls for reform.

The Most Honourable PJ Patterson ON, OCC, KC was at Lancaster House at the time of the making of the Constitution. He was involved in the process, observed room and other dynamics, and is the only person alive today, certainly in Jamaica, who can speak from a position of certain knowledge about the process that led to the implementation of the Jamaica Constitution. When speaking about the Jamaica Constitution, Mr. Patterson can meaningfully and effectively engage from every technical angle that matters, being there as a Legislator when it was made, including as the longest-serving Prime Minister of Jamaica, who led or was involved in critical reform efforts, and as an advocate who argued several cases with significant constitutional implications.

This Reasoning with PJ, as he is affectionately called, to be moderated by Chris, will be frank, honest, incisive, and illuminating. In the end, even those who know or thought they knew a lot about the Jamaica Constitution will learn more about it and the limitations or roadblocks to reform that have presented over time. The Reasoning will also engage how Jamaica could best move forward from being a state under the British Monarchy to becoming a Republic with a closed circle of independence.
