The Catholic Shark Tank at the Angelicum

On December 6th, eight hopeful businesses and NGOs gathered in a boardroom at the Angelicum University in Rome to present their ideas to investors. But they weren’t your typical start-up ideas nor were the investors the businessmen you would usually find on the hit TV show Shark Tank.

This was a Catholic Shark Tank and the founders of the start-ups were an eclectic group comprising of a priest from Nigeria, an American doctoral student, two individuals recently released from prison, and businesswomen from Burundi and Rwanda to name a few. One of the investors present at the event was Jean-Pierre Casey, a member of the recently appointed Vatican’s Investment Committee.

But, how does business and investment go together with Catholic Social Teaching? Pope Francis’s specifically talked about this in August with his prayer intentions going to small businesses fulfilling their social responsibility of generating opportunities and work.
