Three Main Enemies on the Path of Spirituality | Obstacles On The path Of Spirituality | Obstacles on the path of Devotion | Part 2
The REAL BRAVE person is one who can defeat the demons inside! Maharishi Patanjali, in Patanjali Yoga Sutras, has enumerated these demons or the main impediments of the spiritual path. In the previous lecture, Swami Mukundananda graciously explained the impediments of disease, mental inertia, and doubt. In this lecture, he delves deeper into carelessness, laziness, and absence of detachment.
Swamiji enlightens us that carelessness is a big impediment on the spiritual path. For example, we all know that pride is a bad thing. Yet, when the thought of pride comes, we do not take action to the extent required. If we are careful, then we will think that this is not the right sentiment and take it out! When we eat food, if a stone comes in mouth - we immediately take it out. In the domain of mind, our attitude of carelessness pulls us down.
Now, the next impediment is similar - laziness. What is laziness? not doing what we are supposed to do. We know that we should always think of God. Why don't we do it? Laziness. We know we need to attach our mind to God - why we don't do it? Laziness. Some scriptures claim that the biggest enemy in this human body is laziness.
Finally, the absence of detachment: Consider when someone has an attachment to coffee/tea - his/her mind repeatedly goes to that. As another example, Some people say, when we retire we are going to do devotion only. By the time retirement comes, they become attached to grandkids. The highest realization requires complete attachment in God. Can't one have 50-50 attachment between the material world and God? No. Our mind is such that at one time it can ONLY be attached to ONE thing. We do not have the hunger for God because the mind is attached to the world.
Listen to this amazing lecture in full to understand each of the impediments in detail with Vedic references and progress on your spiritual journey.
