Fred Astaire and Leroy Daniels perform, "Shine on My Shoes” from The Band Wagon, 1953.

Choreographer: Michael Kidd.

Assistant Choreographers: Patricia Denise and Alex Romero.

The Band Wagon is Mr. Kidd’s first film as Choreographer. It was at Mr. Astaire request that Mr. Romero be hired as part of the Creative/Choreography Team, due to Mr. Kidd not being able to tap dance. Mr. Romero was also a Stand In for Mr. Astaire.

The films Assistant Choreographer, Alex Romero discovered Mr. Daniels polishing shoes in the streets of Hollywood, as Alex would walk to the MGM Studios.

Mr. Romero was working with Mr. Astaire on the Staging/Choreography for the number “Shine on Your Shoes”.

Mr. Romero said to Fred. “Fred, I got something that might fit here…an idea for you. I ran into this …. kid. I’ve never heard anything like it.”

Mr. Daniels earned $350 for one weeks work, and due to the success of the film and working with Mr. Astaire, doors opened for Mr. Daniels, who went on to be very successful with his own Nightclub Act and also appearing in other Films/TV Shows.
