So……. I think I’m becoming a Captain Marvel Jr. fan, I recently made a video about how the Captain Marvel Jr. series made a numbering mistake where they skipped #34, and for that video I decided to read a few issues of this series, that I did NOT pirate off the internet because they’re unavailable for me anywhere because of where I live, I’d never do such a thing. Anyways I’ve started reading more of this series, and yes it’s the same one that actually inspired Elvis, and I have to say, I’m liking it a lot more than expected and Shazam: Fury Of The Gods just came out, so why not talk about this comic, and no I haven’t read the entire series, it’s 118 issues long, I don’t have the much free time, but I do have enough to read a dozen issues, I actually don’t but I did it anyways because I’m one those people who’ll do anything over the things they need to do, and I’m seventeen….. And I’m enjoying a comic series from the 50s & 40s.
Now a thing that stands out to me about this series from this time is that, how it’s not racist, I mean I only read a dozen issues so maybe it was just the 12 issues I read, and that might sound like a weird thing to mention, but trust me I’ve read a lot of comics, including from this time, and they can be very racist mainly Flash Comics, Johnny Thunder, & Fiddler both had racist back stories, as did most Hawkman stories include racism, and I’m a person of colour so I don’t like reading that, it makes me feel uncomfortable so when it comes down to my favourite series most of mine are from the early 2000’s or late 90’s.
So this is the first time I’ve enjoyed a comic this old, now #35 was the first one I read because it was for the video I made since it was the issue that messed up the numbering for the series it also the first appearance of Sivana Jr. the son of Siavna, also the first story has a cat die in it which was sad, because some guy has made this new technology that can predict when you die, and it predicts Captain Marvel Jr. will die in 24 hours, and he goes out to question the way he’s lived his life thinking about how maybe he should just kill a man who keeps on getting out of jail, but never does it, it has a very kid-ish tone that can excited young readers but also has darker undertones such as this that would bring interest from older audiences, lucky for me I’m a teenager so I read it both. This whole plot about him having 24 hours to live also has a pretty dark end, the doctor who made the tech dies instead, having somehow had it scan himself instead of Shazam Jr. Then the other stories were the ones where Sivana Jr. debuts in, another where a villain named Antbear appears which I thought was funny. The other issues I had read were #39 which had a very salty Sivana Jr. upset over Captain Marvel Jr’s press which I found to be a kinda subtle reference to how children act jealous over each other, I mean I guess not just kids but it’s more common in kids, also #42, #58, #62, #69 because I’m a teenage boy, #72, #87, #92, #93 which we’re going to talk about in a second, #104, & #105.
Now #93 is about a spanking robot, Sivana Jr. made it, and it would in the story spank both of them, this was a common quote on quote “child punishment” back in the day, however nowadays it’s seen more inappropriately therefore this issue I would argue aged in a way that has made it really funny. So….. Yeah, I’m a fan of a 1940s 1950s comic series, and I think I’ll probably be reading even more of it soon.
