This quick history lesson is all about the women scientists behind NASA's historic achievements, from John Glenn's first orbit with Friendship 7 to Apollo 11's mission to the moon.

4th - 10th October is World Space Week! The theme for 2021 is "Women in Space", which is a great time to talk about the hidden figures behind NASA's historic missions.

(Psst, if you fancy learning more about the Apollo 11 mission, take a look at this video 👉    • Apollo 11 Moon Landing (1969) | Quick...  )

Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson were three women who operated behind the scenes on NASA's space missions as "human computers", and became the inspiration for Margot Lee Shetterly's 2016 book, Hidden Figures.

If you want to talk to younger children about the women scientists behind NASA, we have lots of resources covering the topics, like this KS2 History PowerPoint 👉 https://www.twinkl.co.uk/l/qokc4

Unless otherwise stated, images and footage are taken from the NASA multimedia archive and are for educational purposes only.
