Saif Ali Khan was recently stabbed at his house in Bandra. While he was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, the stabber was able to escape and get away. However, Mumbai Police was able to track him down within 48 hours, found him hiding in a Mangrove cover in Thane. I was intrigued to see how Police, tracked him down in such a short duration from a population of over 3 Million people in Mumbai. I talked to a few Police Officers and put together some research to know the steps followed by Police to track individuals.

The three main steps followed are: First, tracking the CCTV movement. Police investigates the CCTV footages to see what area the criminal was found in. This is checked against multiple CCTV to map the movement. Second, CDR - Cell Data Record is used. In this, call data record of a cell tower is taken. This has phone number which are matches against multiple records to track down the phone number. This step is also called Tower Dump Data. The last step is tracking UPI Payments. Police found the criminal had bought a paratha using UPI and they were able to track his phone. The same step was used in Rameshwaran Cafe Incident as well.
