Your bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue inside your bones that makes important blood cells, like RBCs (red blood cells) that carry oxygen, WBCs (white blood cells) that fight infections, and platelets that help in clotting. Sometimes, due to diseases like blood cancer (leukemia), lymphoma, or other serious blood disorders, your bone marrow stops working properly or starts producing abnormal blood cells.
That’s where a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) comes in. It’s a procedure where healthy stem cells are given to a patient to replace or repair the damaged bone marrow. These stem cells can grow into healthy RBCs, WBCs, and platelets, helping the body recover.
There are two main types:
🔹 Autologous BMT – when your own stem cells are collected, stored, and then given back after strong treatment like chemotherapy.
🔹 Allogeneic BMT – when you receive stem cells from a donor, usually a close relative or matched donor.
Once the stem cells are transplanted, they undergo a process called engraftment, during which they begin producing new, healthy blood cells. Doctors closely monitor this stage.
However, in some allogeneic transplants, the body may react to the new cells — this is called GVHD (Graft Versus Host Disease). Doctors manage this with medications.
Bone Marrow Transplant is a life-saving procedure that replaces diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells — either your own or from a donor — to help your body make normal blood cells again.
