Today, in the village where the artwork was created — a heartland of support for the hard-right firebrand Geert Wilders — locals are worn out not from toil in the fields but rather a sense of exasperation with the country’s political establishment.

Two years ago, in Sint Willebrord, 74 per cent of voters backed Wilders — more than three times the national average.
