Capel Celyn - the small village in Wales, nestling in the Tryweryn valley that was chosen by the city of Liverpool to be drowned - in order that the city could control water flow of the lower Dee and ensure water extraction all year round.
Despite no MP’s of Wales voting in favour, and all but one against the idea (one MP abstained) - they were outnumbered by English MP’s and the drowning went ahead.
Arguably the biggest ‘own goal’ of the English establishment, the drowning woke up a nation, and people of Wales reacted with demonstrations, explosions and the emergence of Plaid Cymru - the Party of Wales winning its first seat in Parliament.
This itself inspiring the SNP of Scotland who were yet to win over public opinion let alone an MP.
All road signs in Wales which were English only - became bi-lingual, the first Welsh language TV station lay ahead, and demand increased for Welsh medium schooling. The Welsh language obtained equal status to the English language. In 1997 the people of Wales finally obtained the Senedd, devolution and a Welsh Assembly Government.
Whilst it was a grave travesty what happened in the Tryweryn valley in the 1960s, and one that should never be repeated, the question is did it inadvertently save the language and the identity of Wales? COFIWCH DRYWERYN.
