Описание к видео Leviathan! Ballads & Songs of the Whaling Trade - A. L. Lloyd - full album 1967 - whalers' folk song

A full recording of the album 'Leviathan! Ballads & Songs of the Whaling Trade', by A. L. Lloyd (with Alf Edwards on concertina and ocarina, Dave Swarbrick on fiddle, Martin Carthy on mandoline, and Trevor Lucas and Martyn Wyndham-Reade as chorus), released in 1967 by Topic. Lloyd (1908-1982) was a founder of the label, and a keen folklorist, responsible for a number of similar albums documenting different types of folk song. This record focusses on the whaling trade of the industrial revolution; undoubtedly a controversial trade responsible for a devastating depletion in many of the world's whale populations, but whose gruelling expeditions fostered a unique sense of camaraderie out of which many a song was borne. Commercial whaling was banned by 1986, so this is an interesting piece of documentation to have.

I have transcribed the sleeve notes and put them in a google document, as they contain a good deal of interesting information about each song, as well as an introduction - do check it out!
