October Steam On “The Road Of Anthracite”:RBMN 425 On The Reading And Northern Fall Foliage Special!

On Saturday, 10/23/2021, Joey The Train Guy, Leaky Valley Productions, Northern VA Railfan and I met up in Reading, PA to spend the day chasing RBMN 425 as it led the Fall Foliage Excursion through the Reading and Northern Railroad’s Reading Division. We started the day off by watching 425 couple up to the excursion consist in Reading and then we chased the excursion north towards Jim Thorpe, PA. On the Northbound chase, we caught the train six times over about a three hour timespan. Once the train arrived in Jim Thorpe, we made our way over to the new bridge at Jim Thorpe Junction. It was a little hike to get to the spot but the view from the spot was amazing. From that spot, we saw a few of the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway trains, 425 also used the bridge to run around the passenger consist and then the two SD50s that were helping 425 led the train around the bridge to turn it around for the southbound trip back to Reading. After that, we went to a spot in Nesquehoning, PA to see the Fall Foliage Rail Diesel Car Excursions RBMN RDCs. After the RDCs, 425 came southbound and we chased it all the way back to Reading, catching it six times again. After we chased 425, we got dinner and then got some night exposures of RBMN equipment in Port Clinton and Temple, PA. Chasing 425 was quite intense but extremely fun at the same time and the echo that 425 created was also amazing. 425 plus the peak fall foliage plus some amazing people and an incredible chase made it an overall incredible day on the Reading and Northern Railroad and I will definitely return to chase on this system in the future. I also want to thank Leaky Valley Productions for driving during the chase as he did an amazing job. Overall it was also a great weekend trip to an area that I had wanted to visit for a while!
