Ethnocentrism is the belief that one's own race or ethnic group is more important and superior to others. An ethnocentric individual will judge other cultures based on the standards of their own culture. As an example, some Americans might visit another country and be shocked, mystified, or confused by what is considered normal behavior there. However, the American is judging the culture by an American standard, not by the standards of that country.

Cultural relativism is the opposite of ethnocentrism. It’s the idea that a person's beliefs and activities should be understood in terms of that individual’s own culture, instead of by the standards of another culture. For example, when you travel to another country, the food might seem odd to you. A person taking a culturally relativistic perspective would take the view that they should try and appreciate the food from the perspective of locals, not from the perspective of their own cuisine.
