Last September, Bernie Jackson woke up in the middle of the night to his Justin Road home filled with smoke. His roommate had accidentally started a fire with a cigarette, forcing Jackson to act quickly.

“I picked him up, got him out and closed the door behind me, and I dialed 911,” Jackson recalled. He survived, but nearly everything he owned was destroyed.

After the fire, Jackson turned to his insurance company, Allstate, to begin the claims process. The company provided $25,000 for temporary housing while repairs were underway.

But Jackson says that money has now been wiped out, consumed by monthly rent and rental furniture costs. His home is still under construction and won’t be move-in ready until this summer.
