Hundreds of people in Vijayawada, a city in India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh, were left stranded Monday when heavy rains triggered flash floods in the area.

Residents were forced to wade through waist-high waters, while some complained of a lack of assistance as rescue teams deployed inflatable boats to reach as many stranded residents as possible.

“My parents are stranded. There is no food and water for them,” said one resident.

“The rescue teams and the police personnel are not able to reach them. Nobody is able to help them.”

Rainfall is expected to die down in September but more heavy rains are predicted to hit coastal districts in southern India over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, as floodwaters recede elsewhere in India there are dire warnings about the potential spread of disease. Health-care officials were conducting door-to-door visits in Vadodara, a city in Gujarat province, to defend against diseases like leptospirosis, typhoid and malaria.
