For many decades, Native American children in the United States were sent to government-run boarding schools, in an effort to assimilate them into the broader European-based society that had taken their lands.
Some now call it a deliberate effort at cultural genocide.
In South Dakota, one Indigenous community has reclaimed the remains of their children, who died in those institutions, long ago.
