Trupti Shiralkar, at Director of Product Security Illumio (ex-Director of Product Security at DocuSign), explained the importance of Grey Swan and Black Swan Events in the Security & GRC Decoded podcast.

Black Swan: Rare, unpredictable shocks with huge impact (from Nassim Taleb).
Gray Swan: As Trupti frames it, somewhat predictable events where the impact can be seen coming.

For example, Trupti says COVID-19 wasn’t truly a Black Swan event, as scientists have long known pandemics recur.

Hence Trupti’s warning for CISOs and GRC leaders:

“If we don’t leverage innovation for day-to-day operations, we set ourselves up for Gray Swan events.”

AI is today’s obvious example:
AI is accelerating how fast code enters production.
AI is fueling shadow development outside formal security review.
AI is giving adversaries faster, smarter tools for attack.

None of this is a surprise.

The disruption is here. The impact is predictable.

Trupti says that failing to adopt innovation and prepare now invites severe and preventable consequences later.
