In this video I show you how to play the drums, bass, and guitar parts of a reggae rhythm for acoustic guitar. You can apply this rhythmic pattern to so many songs in 4/4 time and just about any reggae song - in this video we use the chords for Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” as our template, which was recorded in the key of G minor. The use of barre chords turns out to be a good thing here because it allows us to achieve the staccato 8th notes that are so essential to reggae by simply relaxing our hand. We will play block chords on the treble strings with fingers a-m-i between each beat, with the thumb we'll play the bass notes on the 1st and 3rd beats, and on beats 2 and 4 we'll slap the bass strings to get a snare drum "backbeat".
