Where Are You, Mummy? is a song I wrote inspired by the improvised play The Game of Truth and Tea, created and performed by the amazing Shoot From the Hip.

I’ll be honest — I don’t think I’ve ever written a more heartbreaking song, at least for me. I guess people can connect with different songs in different ways, but personally, this one was the easiest to write and the hardest to sing. Almost always when I’m writing, I need to connect it with a feeling. I draw inspiration from emotions.

This song wasn’t really planned. One day, I just felt this heavy sadness that I needed to let out somehow — and that’s how this song was written: with tears. That’s also why it came so easily. It just flowed out naturally.

It was really difficult to find the right instrumental for this song. I tried a few different arrangements, but every time it didn’t feel genuine. So I left it very, very simple and let the words speak for themselves. Honestly, I don’t even know if you’re going to enjoy it, but this song is very special to me, and I wanted to let it go — to set it free.

The song itself deals with many emotions, with the main focus being on loss — specifically, the absence of a mother. I tried to keep the timeline given by SFTH in the play. Arthur is a very young boy, and he sees his mummy as his hero. He loves her because she constantly shows how much she cares for him, loves him, and protects him from anything bad.

Then suddenly, he loses her and becomes separated from her. The only thing this young boy can do is call for her — scream at the top of his lungs — asking questions he will never get answers to. Where is his Mummy?

He gets lost in the maze, and the one person he fully believed in isn’t there with him. He spends much more time in the maze than he expected. He gets older, but since he spends most of his time alone, he doesn’t really grow. He’s still stuck in an endless loop, just looking for his Mummy — the one person he loves unconditionally. She’s his everything.

He looks for her everywhere; he can fight anything in his way just to reach her. And one day, he does manage to leave the maze. But in the end, he doesn’t see his mummy. He knows she’s close — he feels her presence, smells her perfume — but he can’t see her.

The time he spent alone, and the lessons his mummy tried to press into his young mind — especially to always tell the truth — are what finally help him escape and meet her once again. She’s finally there, holding him close, not letting go. And Arthur has never been happier.

I hope you can enjoy this song, even though it’s so sad.
