When rebuilding a cylinder head; removing the valves can be a fiddly job. Make it easier, and more controlled with a ToolPRO Valve Spring Compressor.

This valve spring compressor is designed for use with the head off the engine. Before removing the valves, ensure you have a method of identifying where each valve came from. Labelling each one in a ziplock bag does the trick.

The valve spring compressor has an opening adjustability between 75 and 165 millimetres - and a throat clearance of 150 millimetres. This makes it perfect for most small and medium overhead valve engines. With the handle situated towards the bottom of the head, open the jaws wide enough to place the top over the valve. Adjust the width of the tool at the top if needed - to sit just along the edges of the spring.

Now. Brace the bottom of the tool against the head of the valve, and squeeze the red handle to compress the spring. If the tool won’t hold the position, or the spring isn’t compressed far enough – just release the handle, turn the adjuster, and repeat until it’s right.

The valve spring compressor should hold this position while you remove the keepers or collets. Once this is done, the spring is free to be removed. Gently release the valve spring compressor and remove the retainer, spring, and spring seat from the top of the head. The valve can now be removed by sliding it through the bottom of the head.

Installation of a valve is simply a matter of reversing this process, ensuring that each valve returns to its original location. When releasing the tension on the spring compressor, watch closely to ensure the spring retainer, and keepers or collets have seated properly. A small dab of grease on these parts will help hold them in place during assembly.

With the help of a Valve Spring Compressor, and the extensive range of ToolPRO specialist tools; there’s no job out of your reach.
