Circular cycle ride from Great Ayton to Helmsley passing through Westerdale & Farndale. The almost one-mile descent from Blakey Ridge down Blakey Bank into Farndale is exhilarating. Wonderful fast rides down Newgate Bank and Clay Bank.

Great Ayton is the cycling gateway to the North York Moors for very fit cyclists and e-bikers.

The ride starts in Great Ayton and passes through Easby and Kildale with a long hill climb up to Percy Rigg. Here there is a right turn then up a very steep hill followed by a long descent to Hob Hole where you can either cycle through Baysdale Beck or cross on a bridge. The ride continues up a steep narrow road and you can hope that you don’t meet a car, then there is along descent into Westerdale village. The ride continues up a hill, steep in parts, up to a junction adjacent to Ralphs Crosses. Turn right and continue along Blakey Ridge past the Lion Inn then take a right turn down Blakey Bank into Farndale. The steep descent down Blakey Bank goes on for almost a mile and is truly exhilarating – cycling up it is hard!
The ride continues through Farndale, renowned for daffodils, and bypasses Kirkbymoorside and onto Helmsley with several cafes for coffee and cakes.
The return route includes a long hill climb out of Helmsley and two wonderful descents, down Newgate Bank and Clay Bank, with the route going through Chop Gate and Ingleby Greenhow. This ride can be a two-café stop as the Dudley Arms at Ingleby Greenhow has delicious cakes.
