First Zumwalt Fitted for Hypersonic Missiles Back in the Water

After 14 months of modifications and repairs, the USS Zumwalt was relaunched at Ingalls Shipyard on December 6. The ship’s original 155mm Advanced Gun System has been removed and will ultimately be replaced by the Intermediate-Range Conventional Prompt Strike weapon system with vertical launch capability. The AGS had long been criticized as impractical—its shells cost a staggering $1 million each, and no usable ammunition was ever developed for it. Its removal might signal a better future for this class of ships.
