Dr. Broome: Trochanteric bursitis is one of the more common pain-causing conditions that we see in hips and it can happen in people that have had surgery in the past or people that have never had surgery. Bursitis is simply inflammation on the outside part of your hip. This is a model showing a hip replacement, but in general, the IT band goes from the pelvis right over the side of the bone all the way down to the knee. That band has a bursa where it can rub over the edge of the bone without friction, when that band gets tight or inflamed, that causes bursitis, which is very painful right on the side of your hip. So these are our patients that have pain when they sleep on their side. They have pain when they first stand from a chair or when they sit for a long period of time. Thankfully, this condition is largely treated without surgery. Most of these patients do very well with a physical therapy and stretching regimen, anti-inflammatory medications, and injections and these are all things that we readily treat very easily in the office.
