Recently, because of hurricane Helene, my apartment flooded which ruined many of my possessions and forced me to move out in the time being. Here are 12 frugal habits I'm glad I embraced before this happened.

1. Not Having A Lot of Stuff

I do not have a lot of stuff and so when my apartment flooded, I didn't have many things that got ruined. Less stuff gives you less problems.

2. Buying Second Hand Stuff

Out of the few things that did get ruined, I bought most of them second hand at a discounted price, which made it seem like less of a big deal.

3. Not Having Anything That’s Too Nice

I also didn't have any possessions that were so nice that it would be devastating if they were ruined. When you lose your stuff to a flood, it's not as big of a deal when they're not too nice.

4. Not Having Clutter

Another habit that benefited me in this experience was choosing to live a minimalist lifestyle where I avoid clutter in my life. Since I did not have a bunch of clutter lying around the house, there was less that could get ruined.

5. Not Having A Bunch of Wasted Space

My apartment was two room, which meant that only two rooms of stuff got damaged. If I had a bigger house, a lot more would have been damaged.

6. Not Being Attached to My Possessions

Losing your stuff to a flood can be an emotional experience because we often feel attached to our possessions. Living a life where I didn't feel a sense of attachment to my possessions allowed me to move on quicker.

7. Keeping My Home Organized

When my apartment flooded, my stuff was organized in put away, which all happened to be above the water line. Keeping my home organized allowed many of my possessions to survive.

8. Keeping My Documents Organized

When something like this happens to you, it is important to know your rights. Luckily, beforehand, I kept all of my documents organized so I could easily find them and know what my rights were as a tenant.

9. Advocating For Myself

Another habit I'm glad I embraced before this happened was living a life where I choose to advocate for myself. In this world, I believe nothing will happen unless you make it happen and advocate in your favor.

10. Having Patience

When something like this happens, you want it to be done very quickly; however, things like this often take patience. Having patience is important in scenarios like this and in wealth building in general.

11. Having An Emergency Fund

The big lesson from this experience is the importance of having an emergency fund of 6-12 months of living expenses. The reason this is not a huge deal for me is because I have an emergency fund that makes the transition period smoother.

12. Being Optimistic

Times like these are tough and despite how tough they are, it's important to be optimistic and see the positives from the experience.
