CONSTIPATION
Exclusively breastfed baby constipated? Ditch the gripe water. It’s most likely not effective. Best remedy? Feed baby more often and increase baby’s movement, including tummy time, baby wearing, and position changes.

Milk in is poop out. Prior to introducing solids, not pooping daily can be a sign that baby isn’t getting enough breast milk. Increasing the number of times a day the breast is offered and not limiting time during feeding is often enough to help baby poop more often. Feeding over night also helps with overall volume intake and movement of milk through the bowel.

Movement is essential for helping our digestive system work well. Babies that are in one position for most of the day, constantly swaddled, and always on their back, may have a slower digestive tract from lack of engagement of the abdominal muscles. Tummy time, contact naps (baby sleeps on their tummy on your chest), being carried around during the day instead of flat on a surface all help engage the muscles of the abdomen which promote movement through the digestive tract. You’ve probably heard of bicycling their legs. Here is an example of that movement in a more controlled way to help baby poop. Gentle massage of the tummy in a clockwise movement with stroking down the belly can also relieve gas and belly discomfort.
