This song was inspired by my children when they were 5 and 4 years old respectively. They asked me if Hell was a real place, as I tucked them into bed one night. Without thought, I simply said, "No, hell is just a word." I jotted that down in a notebook before I went to sleep--to save for the right time. The right time ended up being in Seattle the next year: the lyrics and melody just came to me as I walked down the sidewalk, and I wrote the lyrics down as soon as I got back to my hotel. Seattle's a magical city in that respect.

Ultimately, the song is about conquering the darkness by seducing it...using its own tricks against it, so to speak. Like spiritual Karate. So the "girl" this is being sung to is actually the darkness itself--not a real life person. Not biographical at all. There's a blank space in it where I was going to add a guitar solo, but I loved the natural harmonic overtones of the guitar itself so much that I left it alone--it sounds just like an accordion! And there are no odd effects or keyboards on this at all. It was my first time recording with the Fender Thinline my father left me after he passed away. Thank you for joining me on this journey.
