The city of Palermo until the sixteenth century did not have its own promenade, mainly because the frequent storms or the danger of attacks (especially pirates) did not allow to consider the coast line as a safe area. Once the Saracen attacks were reduced, the city reconsidered its outlet to the sea as a safe strip to be used also for leisure. The panoramic seafront of Palermo was commissioned, in 1582, by the viceroy Marco Antonio Colonna, who already the previous year had extended the via Toledo, or the Càssaro, to the Marina. That same year he began the works for the construction of Porta Felice and the road of the forum was called Strada Colonna.

The structure of the forum remained unchanged until 1734, when the praetor Don Giovanni Sammartino of Montalbo oversaw its enlargement by demolishing one of the maritime fortifications, the bastion of the Tuono. Fifty years later the new praetor, Don Girolamo Grifeo prince of Partanna, ordered the demolition of the other bulwark, called di Vega and thus sanctioned the definitive enlargement of the area, which in the following years was increasingly embellished and cared for, becoming the favorite destination for Palermo's walks.

The statues depicting the Bourbon kings constituted the urban furniture of the promenade: Ferdinand III by Ignazio Marabitti from 1790, Carlo II by Giovanni Travaglia, Philip V by Giovanni Battista Ragusa, Carlo III by Lorenzo Marabitti, two fountains with water features and the Loggia o Theater or Stage for Music at the Forum. During the domination of the Bourbons, the area took the name of Bourbon Forum until in 1848, in the midst of anti-Bourbon riots, the Sicilian Parliament decided to change it to Foro Italico. This name was abandoned in 1849, after the restoration of the Bourbon government, only to be restored in 1860, after the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.

On July 29, 1900, King Umberto I was assassinated, causing a wave of emotion that led to the assumption of the current name, although even today by most of the Palermitans, it is still known and called Foro Italico.

Before the Second World War the sea came close to the current route of the road. Following the air attacks carried out during the conflict, by both the German and American sides, some parts of the port area and the historic center were damaged. In the immediate post-war period, most of the debris was displaced in this area of ​​the coast, moving the sea away and, in fact, eliminating the promenade. For years the area remained uncultivated and abandoned. Between the end of the nineties of the twentieth century and the early 2000s the area was restored as part of a coastal recovery plan according to the project of the architect Benedetto Terruso for the Municipality of Palermo [2] A part of the green area is entitled to the writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa.
