In this short video, we will look at the General tab focusing on Data Sources.

Within BPA Platform - let's open an example task.
We can see a Data Connector, let's click to open it.

Selecting the General tab, we can see fields to enter a meaningful name and description for the step.
Following this is the Data Source section, which is a feature of many tools and connectors.
We will begin with the No Data Source option.

We can see in the Task Design there is no input source for this step, so we will use BPA Platform variables in place of the XML objects fields.
In the mapping tab we can see two functions. The first - contains a static value and is mapped to the supplementary reference field.

The second contains a dynamic value that is inserted by a global variable.
The global variable can be populated by an external source such as another task, Database Query or another system with the value changing per run of the Task.
Next, we will look at using a Task Step as the input for the Connector.
Selecting this option activates a drop-down list.
Only those steps that are capable of natively exposing an input at runtime are listed.
For this example, we will select Output XML from Import XML document.
Newer tools can also consume Recordset data in addition to XML, and will have added Recordset Shaping functionality - which we will look at in another video.
Let's go to the Mapping tab and expand the Input and Operational data trees.
We can see the input from the Import XML Document, which can now be mapped to the corresponding fields on the right.

Let's take a look at the third Data Source option which is Custom Schema.
An XML schema defines the structure of the XML to be passed, what tags are present, and the nesting of the tags.We can do this by selecting Define.
From here we can either paste an XSD Schema or XML into this box, or as in our example - click to import a file. We will set the file type as XML, browse to an XML file and click open. Clicking the Parse button will create the schema from the XML file and also provide feedback on the validity of the structure.

Once the schema has been established, a variable containing the XML source data must be supplied. The source data must conform to the defined schema.
The variable is dragged from the browser to the input source variable field.
This data can then be mapped as required.
