In this lecture, I have started with the first reading of the course - Indian Economy I, Semester V of Economics Hons. This reading based on the economic discourse of period immediately after independence wherein Prime Minister Nehru was at the helm of affairs.

In this class we have discussed the following :

1. How Nehruvian period was quantitively & qualitatively different from the period that preceded it and also the period which followed it.

2. The essential elements of the Nehru Mahalonobis Model as well as the elements of the 2nd Five Year Plan (1956-61) - where we need to understand that the model was a part of the plan. We also do a critical evaluation of this model, without going into deeper details.

3. The alternative plan proposed by Vakil & Brahmanand - Wage Goods Model & its critical evaluation.

4. Strategy of second year plan on increasing the Income level in the country as well the linkages between agriculture & industry which were highlighted both in plan documents as well as speeches' of PM Nehru.

5. Evaluation of growth in Nehruvian era with that of pre independence years as well as the growth rate of contemporaneous countries.

In the next lecture we will discuss about some of common allegations relating to the legacy issues emanating from the economic paradigm of Nehruvian era.

This lecture would also be useful for students who are preparing for UPSC IAS economics Optional, IES and RBI DEPR.
