Описание к видео MEDventure: Obesity and sedentary lifestyle

Overweight or obese? Why do fat pads develop? What is body mass index? How to maintain an ideal weight? What research has been done on the problem? In our animated film, we look for answers to these questions as well. Our video has been reviewed by Semmelweis University experts.

A greater deviation from the ideal weight from a health point of view can lead to serious illnesses and even premature death. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity and a sedentary lifestyle will soon be indirectly responsible for two-thirds of deaths. The accumulation of fat that accompanies obesity compromises the body’s functions, including important areas such as the endocrine and immune systems. However, it is good to know that most of the co-morbidities associated with obesity are reversible, so the risks can be reduced.

Obesity is a disease, for the treatment of which it is worth seeking the help of a specialist. Although it is typically caused by a sedentary lifestyle and a diet of inadequate composition and quantity, obesity can also be caused by a variety of genetic conditions, hormonal disorders (e.g. thyroid problems), organ failures (e.g. polycystic ovary syndrome), metabolic disorders (e.g. insulin resistance), so diagnosis and treatment of these is the first step to recovery.

We will show you how to calculate the body mass index (BMI), which helps to find out the degree of obesity. We will discuss what calories are and why you should keep track of how many of them you consume. We show you how to determine the daily calorie requirements of an average-weight adult.

To lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, you need regular exercise. What duration and intensity of physical activity is recommended for the average adult? Why is prevention important from an early age? What are the implications of an altered gut flora composition, stress or disturbances in sleep biorhythm? These are some of the questions we will address in this part of the MEDventure series. Stay tuned and subscribe to our video channel!
