Matthew 27:32-38, Mark 15:21-28, Luke 23:26-34, John 19:17-24
Verse 1
Simon of Cyrene was passing by,
Coming in from the country that day;
The father of Alexander and Rufus,
The soldiers forced him to take up the weight.
They laid the cross on his shoulders,
To carry it behind the Lord Jesus;
As Jesus went out bearing His cross,
Toward Golgotha, to the death that frees us.
Verse 2
A multitude followed after Jesus,
Women mourning as the Master came;
But He said, “Daughters of Jerusalem,
Weep for yourselves—not for Me in My pain.
The days are coming when barren wombs
Will be called blessed in the land;
‘Mountains, fall on us,’ people will cry,
And ‘Hills, please cover us’ where we stand.
If they do this when the wood is green,
What will they do when the wood turns dry?”
And two condemned men walked beside Him,
Led away with Jesus, there to die.
Verse 3
They reached the place called Golgotha,
Which in Aramaic means “Place of a Skull”;
They offered Him wine mixed with gall,
Bitter myrrh—but He drank none at all.
They crucified Him on the beams,
And lifted the cross upright;
Two robbers, both criminals—one each side—
Framed the Holy Prophet’s plight.
Chorus —
Golgotha—Place of the Skull,
Outside the city wall.
“Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,”
Written for every eye to recall—
In Aramaic, Latin, and Greek it stood,
Above Him, clear and true;
Numbered among the transgressors there—
One on the left, one on the right—
Golgotha—Place of the Skull,
Where darkness meets the Light.
Verse 4
The soldiers divided His garments,
Casting lots to see what each would take;
Four parts—one portion for each man,
Fulfillment no thief could fake.
But His tunic, woven in one whole piece,
From top to bottom well-made—
They said, “Let us not tear it apart;
Let the lot decide its fate.”
So the Scripture was fulfilled that said,
“For my clothing they cast lots.”
Then they sat down and kept their watch,
Beneath the fatal cross.
Verse 5
Pilate wrote the inscription plain:
“This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”
But the chief priests said, “Change it—
Say ‘He said He was King’”—but Pilate refused.
Two others hung on either side,
One on His right, and one on the left;
And there the Word was accomplished—
“He was numbered with those who transgressed.”
Then Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them;
They know not what they do.”
And the soldiers just stood waiting,
Ignorant of the prophecy coming true.
Final Chorus —
Golgotha—Place of the Skull,
Where every Word came true.
The seamless tunic left to chance,
Yet Scripture was carried through.
Written above Him for all to read—
“Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,”
Golgotha—Place of the Skull—
Where the Holy One suffered for you.
