Mastering technology is one of the key tasks of our generation. Digital transformation advances at unprecedented speed and we can’t afford to stay aside. That is why the Commission has launched initiatives such as the Skills Agenda for Europe which includes the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition; the Digital Opportunity Traineeship initiative and why it supports EU Code Week.

Major investments in areas such as High Performance Computing, Artificial Intelligence and cybersecurity are needed to keep the EU at the forefront of innovation. To ensure that we can reap the benefits of these investments we also need people with advanced digital skills to develop, roll-out, and use these new technologies.

Therefore, the Commission’s proposal for the next EU budget includes the new Digital Europe Programme which will focus on supporting to the development of advanced digital skills.

The session will look at:

1. How to increase the availability of advanced digital skills to spur Europe's competitiveness and innovation uptake?

2. How to prepare young people for studies and careers that will include advanced digital skills?

3. How to promote life-long learning to support the development of advanced digital skills?

The European Digital Skills Awards will be also be presented by Commissioner Gabriel.
