Meta acquires AI Startup Manus to boost commercial revenue
Meta Platforms has acquired Singapore-based AI startup Manus, marking the social media giant's latest move to translate massive AI investments into revenue-generating products. The deal, announced on December 29, brings aboard a fast-growing developer of autonomous AI agents that serve small and medium-sized businesses through subscription services.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the acquisition gives Meta immediate access to a proven revenue model in the AI space. Just weeks before the deal announcement, Manus reported reaching $125 million in annual revenue run rate—achieving the milestone only eight months after launching in March 2025, making it the fastest startup to reach $100 million in annual recurring revenue.

The acquisition aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg's strategy to build commercial businesses around Meta's substantial AI investments, which have become the company's top priority. Meta has committed at least $70 billion in capital expenditures for 2025, with projections exceeding $100 billion next year, primarily focused on AI infrastructure.

Autonomous Agents meet Scale
Manus develops general-purpose AI agents designed to independently execute complex tasks ranging from research and automation to web development, with minimal human intervention. Since launch, the platform has processed more than 147 trillion tokens and created over 80 million virtual computers.

"Joining Meta allows us to build on a stronger, more sustainable foundation without changing how Manus works or how decisions are made," said Xiao Hong, Manus CEO, in a statement posted to the company's website. The startup will continue operating from Singapore and maintain its subscription service through its app and website.

The deal follows Meta's December acquisition of AI wearables startup Limitless, signaling an aggressive push to convert AI research into consumer and business products. Meta has been growing more than 20% month-over-month since releasing Manus version 1.5 in October, according to the company. Zuckerberg has articulated a vision for "personal superintelligence" and predicted that billions of AI agents will eventually exist, with every business maintaining an AI agent for customer interactions.
