Your cover can last for many years with proper care and maintenance. You should give your automatic cover system a thorough inspection at least two to three times a year. Over the years, depending on your cover's exposure to chemicals, heat, and sun, the cover vinyl will become brittle and eventually begin to crack. Inspection of this kind of deterioration should begin with an examination for leaks. If you have any leaks, patch them immediately with the patch repair kit. Any area where the vinyl has become stiff or brittle can be a problem since it indicates that the vinyl may be weakening. Consult your service technician immediately if you notice this problem and have the cover repaired. You should also inspect the sewing where the vinyl is attached to the webbing on the side of the cover by your tracks. If any threads are broken or if the webbing has begun to tear or fray, the strength of your cover will be compromised.
To inspect the track, you should first look at the fasteners that are used to hold the track to the pool side. Make sure screws are tight. If your system uses track channel, check for any missing shims and check for any blackenings around the opening of the channel which indicates that the inside of the track channel may be getting larger and might allow the cover to pull out of the track.
A pulley is located at the end of each track. A worn pulley can cause cover adjustment problems that can eventually lead to a broken rope. Pulleys usually last three to five years. If a pulley causes a noticeable clicking or grinding sound it's missing a ball bearing or is frozen in position. You should contact your local dealer for replacement as soon as possible. Call your service technician if you feel there's any significant difference in the areas you inspect.
